Maritime Museum
The museum sits underneath a restored mid-nineteenth century cast iron and steel-plate lighthouse lantern.
The challenge was the integration of an historic-based structure onto a contemporary dock.
Constructed on a government wharf in the harbour community of Port Alberni, the building acts as a beacon to welcome visitors and alert them to the area’s maritime history.
Port Alberni is one of the province’s biggest working logging centres.
Most of the timber was supplied by local industries.
Attention to detail enabled the design to satisfy the client’s needs for 3000 sq. ft. of exhibition space. Utilizing local materials strengthened the building’s integration into its natural environment.
A distinctive and fascinating structure, the building is relatively humble while enriching the community’s presence as an icon.
The client is The Maritime Museum Society of Port Alberni, BC.
